Hearts with Haiti, a nonprofit, is seeking donations to rebuild three orphanages it sponsors in Haiti.
The orphanage in Port–au-Prince was destroyed by the earthquake, and the orphanages in Jacumel and Fermente were severely damaged, leaving the children at risk or homeless, said Stephen Leone, president of Printex Inc., in Woburn, Mass.
Leone has traveled to Haiti twice and become a leading supporter of Hearts with Haiti, a nonprofit that supports the orphanages.
“The homes are doing vital work,” he said. “Your donation will go directly to helping the children at the three homes.”
Many of the children are former child slaves rescued by the orphanages. A video clip from ABC World News, posted on the organization’s home page, tells the story of how a former child slave founded one orphanage, which is now in ruins.
One of the first organizations to respond to Leone’s appeal is Boston’s Longfellow Benefits. It is making a corporate donation and matching all donations made by its associates.
“We’re glad to step up to the plate and help support Steve and Hearts with Haiti,” said Joseph M. Gray, the firm’s managing partner.
